How do I apply for Social Security Disability benefits in Virginia?

Richmond VA SSDI Claim Attorney Fredericksburg SSDI Appeals Lawyer Virginia

There are three ways to apply for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration:

  • In person: Go to your local Social Security office and ask to file for disability benefits. In many ways, this is the most difficult method because you may have to "take a number."
  • By telephone: Call 1-800-772-1213 and ask to file by phone. This central number will set a specific date and time for a local Social Security worker to call you and take basic information for your application. In the meantime, they will send you a lot of different forms to complete and return.
  • Over the Internet: Go to www.ssa.gov and look for SSA's disability application over the Internet (called "e-dib").

Bruce and our staff will be happy to talk with you about when it is appropriate to have a lawyer help you at the application stage.

The First Two Steps in the SSDI Application Process

Attorney Bruce Billman believes that Social Security disability cases are about making the government understand that it is dealing with a person—not a Social Security number.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) contracts with the state of Virginia through Disability Determination Services (DDS), part of the Virginia Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. This entity are involved in the first two steps in the following ways:

  • Step 1: DDS handles the initial determination involving the application for benefits. DDS makes a recommendation to SSA about whether your claim should be approved or denied.
  • Step 2: DDS also handles the appeals of denials of initial applications. The appeal is a called a "request for reconsideration. Again, DDS will recommend to SSA whether to approve or deny your claim.
